Advising
The advisory program is designed to help and support students as they manage the academic, extracurricular and social demands of school life. The program’s objective is to build and maintain open lines of communication between the School, the student, and each student’s parents or guardians. Advisors monitor their advisees’ progress, and when necessary for the advisees’ well-being, consult with parents and teachers.
1. All students have an advisor and each advisor works with approximately ten advisees. Advisories meet once during each five-day cycle of classes.
2. Advisors are concerned with the academic and social growth of their advisees. Advisors help their advisees develop a sense of “self,” as well as a sense of class unity and responsibility. Advisors strive to develop a trusting relationship and seek to maintain open communication with each advisee. Throughout the year, advisors are in regular communication with a Head Advisor and/or the Deans’ Office should there be issues or concerns which need attention.
3. The goal of the advisory program is to develop communication between advisors, teachers, parents and school administration that is regular, informative and meaningful. Should academic problems arise in a specific course, parents should first contact the individual teacher. At any time, however, parents are welcome to include their child’s advisor or other school personnel to enhance the quality of communication.
Parent/Student/Teacher Conference
The function of the Parent/Student/Teacher Conference is to provide an additional opportunity for communication between the advisor, the student and the parents. It is imperative for both the student and parents to attend these scheduled conferences. Parents should contact the school at least one week prior to these conferences to schedule a meeting time.
Curriculum Coordinator
One advisor at each grade level is designated as Curriculum Coordinator. The Curriculum Coordinator is responsible for overseeing implementation of the curricular issues at their grade level. This includes interdisciplinary planning, coordinating written assignments and tests, and acting as the liaison between the grade level team and the Deans’ Office. The Curriculum Coordinator will work with the Head Advisor to ensure that the grade level team is kept abreast of important news and events pertaining to their grade level.
Head Advisor
One advisor at each grade level is designated as a Head Advisor who is responsible for the class as a whole. The Head Advisor assumes the role of a facilitator, working simultaneously with students, other advisors and the Parent Liaisons (the grade-level parents who represents an individual class on the Parents’ Council and coordinates class social activities) to ensure projects planned and activities undertaken by the class are successfully completed.
