History

John Barnes and Allen Cole founded Whitfield School in 1952 as an entrepreneurial operation with a minimal capital investment. For many years, the school functioned as a for-profit business. In fact, the building now known as the Barnes & Cole Alumni House served both as the school building and as the founders' residence. For twenty-plus years, Mr. Barnes and Mr. Cole worked to create an atmosphere where learning was both challenging and fun and where students had every opportunity to succeed. Many alumni from this early era fondly remember Mr. Barnes and Mr. Cole for their distinctive personalities, their senses of humor and their genuine warmth and caring.
